Horse of the Month :: Jan 2011

Keep those entries coming. Feel free to enter every month!
"Zip"

This is Zip's Little Coyote, an 8 year-old Quarter Horse. His name is fitting, he is quite mischievous, he has brought back my love of this stocky breed. I showed saddleseat for ten years, and while in college I had to sell my Saddlebred. I started visiting home and had no horse to ride. My grampy graciously shared Zip, and I fell in love with him! We began barrel racing and pole bending two summers ago; last summer we competed seriously. No one believed it was our first season together when started winning. At the hometown fair we won our pole bending class and made the ring master, my grampy, quite proud.
Runners-up
"Splash"

This is Splish Splash. She is a 14.1hh black and white paint. She is 12 years-old and incredibly athletic. Splash is my daughter's best friend. A day is not complete unless the two have spent time together. Splash does a little bit of everything which is what makes her such a great pony. My daughter and Splash have competed in dressage, hunter/jumper, combined test, pair pace events and even western. Riding is not all about showing for these two though, they both enjoy lots of time at home and on the trails. Splash is a one person pony with extreme loyalty to my daughter. They make a great team and I look forward to what they will do next!
"Luke"

This is Luke, a 3 year-old AMHA/AMHR miniature gelding. Luke is owned by our son, DJ, who wears a prosthesis on his lower leg. DJ was present and assisted when Luke was born and the two have had a bond ever since. As a coming 3 year-old, Luke was trained to drive in country pleasure, jumping and versatility this past winter by DJ and his dad, Dan. Luke and DJ competed in miniature horse shows during the 2010 show season and then competed at the 2010 AMHR National Show in Tulsa, Oklahoma in September - the first National Show for both Luke and DJ. Luke and DJ were the PMC (physically & mentally challenged) Reserve National Champion Youth Country Pleasure Driving 8-12 years!!! Also Luke and DJ were Top 10 in PMC Showmanship, Youth Showmanship 8-12 years and Youth Versatility! Luke was willingly trained for all his events and always does his best for his pal, DJ.
"Boots & Smoke"

Meet Katie Martin (left) with Boots & Julia Martin with Smoke. Boots is a 12 year-old bay Missouri Foxtrotter gelding. He loves to do cowhorse work, and is a great gymkhana horse. He's always the only Missouri Foxtrotter competing in these events in our area. He & Katie have won several buckles, He was a Grand Champion Cow horse & Gymkhana horse at our local county fair. Smoke is a 7 year-old registered blue roan Quarterhorse gelding. He was trained in a feed lot and is great as a competitive cow horse. Julia is age 10 in this picture. Julia & Smoke make a great team.
"Rio"

Gold N Rio is a 7 year-old purebred Arabian stallion. He is ridden western and trail rides. He has impeccable manners and is siring "cookie cutter" babies. Most people first see his beautiful color, but when they look closer, they see his wonderful conformation, athletic ability and, most importantly, his incredible disposition. Rio is passing on all of those characteristics to babies as well. His foals live all over the U.S. He resembles Gene Autry's horse Champ with his striking good looks.
"Princey"

I found CBS Golden Prince, aka "Princey", a healthy, playful, and intelligent 8 year-old Quarter Horse at an auction when he was 5. I was a dreamy-eyed girl who loved horses and he was a youngster feeling his oats when we bought him and took him home, and through the years, he's taught me how to be stubborn, stand up for myself, and love unconditionally. Princey has filled my entire house with portraits of his smug mug and my room with about 30 ribbons from game, pleasure, costume, and drill team shows and competitions. He is extremely loyal and trusting - he waits for me to get home from school by the gate every day and he lets me nap with him whenever he lays down to take a sunbath. He gives me kisses and hugs and nods his head when I ask him a question, and I can even walk off of his back and jump from his rump! I've lost count of the times I've felt so down-trodden and looked up in those big brown eyes and felt the world melt away. The descendant of Domino, Man-O'-War, Native Dancer, Discovery, and Eclipse, he's pokey for his great lineage, but he always puts the wind in my hair and a song in my heart. Other horses and humans alike adore him, but I'll always be his biggest fan, no matter how many times he gets into the trash or the feed in the back of the truck! I love you, Princey!
"Adamir"

Adamir is a 15.2 hand Haflinger. Adamir is a one-of-a- kind special guy, always taking care of Jessy and putting her first. She rides him for Pony Club and she also foxhunts him. While Adamir was hunting this season, he and Jessy were asked to lead second field and they were also invited to ride with the Master. Adamir is brave, handsome and has a heart of gold!
"Smokey"

Meet Blues Royal King, who is known around the farm as Smokey. He is an 18 year-old blue roan Appendix Quarter Horse. He is shown in Western and English pleasure at local open shows by my husband who is a novice rider. He has given my husband the opportunity to have a blast riding. When I am doing chores in the evening, I know that my husband is home because Smokey nickers and runs up the pasture to meet him. He is the biggest beggar for treats and has a comical personality. He will always have a home with us. We couldn't have asked for a better first horse for my husband.
"Velvet"

This is Velvet. She is a 5 year-old, blue roan Canadian Sport Horse. What makes Velvet special is that three years ago I won her in a raffle with 9 tickets out of 2700. It was the best day of my life and I feel so blessed to have gained my greatest friend. I have learned so much from Velvet; over our three years together we have mastered trail riding and currently are learning the basics of dressage.
"Cody"

Buffalo Bill, RE "Cody" is a 6 year-old Welara Pony gelding. He is a super boy with a wonderful personality! Cody smiles, gives kisses, twirls a rope like a lasso, plays ball, and generally does anything that elicits a laugh or delight from his onlookers. He has the intelligence of the Arabian and the spunkiness of the Welsh Pony - what a combo! Cody enjoys dressage training, a bit of jumping, and mainly trail riding.
