Horse of the Month :: October 2010

Keep those entries coming. Feel free to enter every month!
"Kissed by an Angel"

This is "Kissed by an Angel". She is a Welsh X with the most wonderful, caring personality! She is just as her name implies... an Angel. I am 11 years old and have been showing my pony since 2007. This year she is leading in Zone 8 in Children's Pony Hunter and 11 & Under Equitation. There is nothing in this world like my sweet pony. She will jump, cross water, trail ride and let me dress her up for Horses with Halloween at the Colorado Horse Park. Everyone should know I LOVE my pony!
Runners-up
"Eli"

This is my daughter and her horse El Dorado, "Eli" as we call him. He is a 11 year-old, Hanoverian gelding. He is just finishing his first show season, and it has been a wonderful year. They ride dressage at the training level. Eli has been a blessing in our life and is the perfect match for my daughter. Jenna is 5'10" and fits his 17hh frame so perfectly.
"Liza & Sugar"

10 year-old Liza and Sugar Youth competing at Youth Nationals in New Mexico in July.
"Rocky"

This is Rocky! Rocky is a 3 year-old Tennessee Walking Horse. I bought him when he was just 1 1/2 years of age. Rocky was a skinny, shy horse that wouldn't let you get anywhere near him. After only a couple of months of work and feed, I was able to brush him and handle him just like he had been doing it all his life. If he is not in your pockets looking for treats, he is taking your brushes and throwing them on the floor. Rocky is the clown of the barn. If you need a good laugh, just hang out with Rocky! He is currently under saddle and we are working on him becoming the best trail horse I have ever had!
"Gambler"

This is Hesa Gamblin Saint aka Gambler. He is a 4 year-old Quarter Horse that loves to run barrels. He is very special for several reason. First reason is because he is a full brother to my main barrel horse Gold Digger Country. Second reason is because Gambler has had many set backs in his short career but keeps striving to be the best. His biggest set back was colic surgery in February of 2010. However he did not let that slow him down for long. He was running barrels again in May 2010. Gambler proves to me everyday that he has a heart full of gold and is a very special horse indeed.
"Tahoe"

This is "Tahoe". He is my 10 year-old Arabian endurance horse. We just started doing 50 mile endurance rides last year, and he ended that season with a Top Ten finish. This season he has had many Top Ten finishes. He loves his job as an endurance horse, is a tremendous athlete and a wonderful friend. The veterinarians at all the endurance rides always comment on the fact that he has such good ground manners, and ask why someone as short as I am (4'10") has such a big horse (16hh).
"Frosty"

This is my horse Frosty. He is a 12 year-old Double Registered Rocky Mountain/Kentucky Mountain Horse gelding. I was looking for a kind, good natured, naturally gaited horse that would be a pleasure to ride. Well, that's Frosty. I am 56 years old and have had some scary experiences on horses. I was ready to give it all up until I found "Frost". He has warmed my heart and stirred my soul. I hope we can ride together forever!!
"Tippin"

Tippin is an 8 year-old Appalossa Gelding. He is our family horse. Tippin loves to jump, eat grass and go on trail rides. Every day when my sisters and I go to the barn, Tippin pokes his head out of his window and looks very excited to see us. He looks like he is wondering what adventure we will be taking him on that day.
"Phionix"

This is Phionix, my 10 year-old Quarter Horse mare. I was always a horse fanatic, growing up watching movies like Black Beauty and The Black Stallion, and dreamed of owning my own. On my 12th birthday I was going to go for a ride with my uncle as a birthday present, not knowing the horse I was supposed to ride was my own. I cried because I was so full of joy. We have learned a lot together and she has taught me so much. She's the best trail horse you could ask for and just a great all-around horse. But mostly we enjoy riding with our friends just for fun.
"Sir Lokkias"

This is my Friesian stallion Sir Lokkias. I got Lokki when he was 6 months old; he is now a beautiful boy at 7. We trail ride every day, and love to ride on the beach.
"Pancho & Cisco"

These are my two best buddies, Pancho and Cisco. They are 5 year-old BLM Burros. My husband and I adopted them 4 years ago. The "wild" in them disappeared quickly as they came to trust us. They now love to go for walks, and they are just now old enough to carry packs into the Sierra foothills for my mother's gourmet hiking group. Mornings begin with "gentle brays!' from the pasture as they respond to the flick of a light switch in the house. The role of ranchhand is one they love when we are fixing fence. They empty the ATV of the tools looking to "help!" Stealing gloves from my back pockets is a favorite game as is playing tug of war with an old water hose! Adding these terrific critters to our herd has been a ton of fun. We use every opportunity to encourage others to "adopt a wild burro or two!"
